254 - Moderation: A Construct of Control

Jack and Tiffany are back together, tired and early on a Thursday morning in Tiff's office overlooking the mountains, and they go straight into something that's been sitting with them both: how moderation became this sacred rule, and what it actually cost them.

Tiffany talks about how these ideas come to her — downloads from the Blue, rapid-fire, downloading at speed while she's laying in bed. Jack talks about watching her eyes veer off to the right when it's happening. It's become normal to them now.

Then they dive into the doctrine that shaped them: "The natural man is an enemy to God." And the paired command: "Moderation in all things." What that actually means is this — you're born flawed, your natural desires are suspect, and your job is to prove obedience by restraining yourself. By not wanting too much. By being small.

Jack got extremely moderate. Tiffany came into his life and blew that open. They talk about how this teaching dumbed down their natural proclivity toward anything. How Jack was taught to disconnect from his own desires. How Tiffany felt guilty for laughing too loud. How all of it, all of it, was rooted in the belief that who you naturally are is wrong — and needs to be controlled.

This is the episode for anyone still carrying that load.
